So as many of you all know, myself and the team at Sands Resort Hotel spent the festive season raising well needed pennies for St Petroc’s Society, a very worthy charity who help single homeless people aged between 18 and 65+.
In the early stages of planning for this fundraising campaign my intention was to raise money and create awareness on the issue of homelessness. I can honestly say that I feel we have been able do those two things and so much more.
I was hoping to be able to raise £1000, so I am so thrilled that we managed to raise £1387.50.
We were also featured in the local papers, interviewed on Pirate FM, BBC Radio Cornwall and made it on to the BBC spotlight news on the evening of the main event. Allowing us to reach as many people as possible and highlight the on-going issue of homelessness.
I’m incredibly overwhelmed at the support I received from my work colleagues, who each took on responsibilities that allowed us to create and develop such a successful fundraising campaign. I wouldn’t have been able to make this happen without them.
I cannot thank my clients and members of the public enough, who have amazed me with their generosity. Whether you made a financial donation, took part in our raffle or donated unwanted clothes to our clothing bin. Every single bit helped, thank you so much.
Reflecting back, I feel that I have learnt so much. I had no idea how much St Petroc’s helped people in need. Not only do they help to house their clients, they offer food in their drop-in centres, they offer warm clothing and offer emotional support.
It was an absolute pleasure spending a day in December offerig haircuts for those in need. I can honestly say that I got to meet some lovely genuine souls. It was intriguing and heart breaking hearing their stories. I was astonished how strong these folk are who with the help of St Petroc’s are turning their lives around and are on the road to recovery.
Mark (the area outreach worker for St Petroc’s) and myself were unsure of how the day would go. But the general feedback was that our guests thoroughly enjoyed the day and felt they got to escape reality, relax and unwind.
It was such a good feeling giving something back to people who needed it. The whole experience really opened my eyes to how we often take the basic things in life for granted, you know having a home, food in the cupboards and family that love us.
If there’s one thing that I have learnt from the fundraising campaign is that, offering your smile and giving one’s time and attention to someone in need can really go along way and make a massive difference to someone’s day.
As much as the money will enable St Petroc’s to help people in need in many ways. I feel it is the shift in our attitudes that will really make a difference.
